Give it a Voice

Hello Fellow Reader!

Now it is time to find my restaurant's voice with type. Here is my professor's prompt for this assignment:

"For this assignment, you will explore how different typographic directions communicate tone, personality, and cultural influence for your restaurant. You are not choosing “the final fonts” yet. You are defining possible typographic voices that could authentically support your brand.
Your goal is to test how type can express the same experience you described in your dining narrative.
You must create at least two distinct typographic directions."

In ChatGPT, I asked for about 15 different typeographic directions. As I went through them and the typeface examples, I understood the direction I wanted to go with the voice. There were a lot of great recommendations, but I think to really get that homey and inviting feeling, the typeface should have more texture and have some handcrafted traits while keeping it highly legible by avoiding overly decorative scripts or cursive, since most young people these days cannot read cursive, unfortunately.

These were my top three:

Typographic Direction 1: Rustic & Playful

Typeface Examples:

  • Headlines: Amatic SC (narrow, hand-drawn)

  • Subheads: Raleway (clean sans serif for balance)

  • Body Text: Nunito (rounded, readable)

Sample Text:
Headline: Bold Flavors, Warm Welcomes
Subhead: A home for family recipes and shared meals
Body Text: Guests explore bright, vibrant dishes in a space that feels lively yet comfortable. Every visit encourages connection, community, and the joy of discovering new flavors.

Explanation:

  • Tone: Playful, warm, approachable

  • Guest Feeling: Fun, curious, welcomed

  • Support for Dining Experience: Adds a sense of energy and personality without being overwhelming

  • Applications: Social media, daily specials, event flyers, casual menu headings

Typographic Direction 2: Elegant & Warm

Typeface Examples:

  • Headlines: Playfair Display (serif, refined)

  • Subheads: Merriweather (serif, friendly, legible)

  • Body Text: Lora (serif, approachable, readable)

Sample Text:

Body Text:
Every dish is prepared with intention, using fresh, high-quality ingredients to create a dining experience that feels like home. Typographic Direction 3: Rustic & Textured
